What are flyways?

Flyways can be defined as:

"the entire range of a migratory population through which it moves on annual basis from the breeding grounds to the non-breeding areas, including intermediate resting and feeding places as well as the area within which the birds migrate".

Besides of defining the flyway of a population, the flyway term is also used for defining overlapping migration routes of a group of species ('multi-species flyways') or global regions for waterbird management ('political flyways').

At all of these scales, the flyway concept encompasses the conservation and wise-use of wetlands and waterbirds across multiple sites across very large areas.

Flyway approach

The flyway approach to the conservation of migratory waterbirds promotes actions that ensure connection between sites, species and the ecological interactions that support these.

The flyway concept helps to understand the problems a migratory waterbird encounters throughout its annual cycle and also helps identifying which countries and organisations should collaborate to protect and sustainably manage the population.
