Maarten-Jan

Maarten-Jan was captured as a young bird along the Linge river in the Netherlands.

Maarten-Jan Baay is the winner of the youth photo contest of the Bird festival 2008. With a beautiful photo of a Grey Heron he won, amongst others, the opportunity to name one of these transmitter-marked herons.

Maarten-Jan has left the Netherlands only in mid-October 2008. This late departure has attracted a lot of attention and he  starred in an episode of Vroege Vogels, a Dutch television programme on birds. Finally, he started his southward journey on 19 October.

Within a few days, he has crossed over into Africa and has reached the foothills of the Atlas Mountains at Oued el Hallouf in Morocco. He has stayed there since 22 October rather than crossing the Sahara. However, since mid-February 2009, he has sent no more signals. It is worrying as this is the same place where we lost Tom.
